Learn more about the new way of paying welfare benefits through prepaid cards.

According to a decision of the Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family, from 15.03.2025, the new method of payment of certain welfare benefits in cash, as well as allowances and financial assistance paid by the Public Employment Service (DYPA) and the Organisation for Welfare Benefits and Social Solidarity (OPEKA) will be implemented. An exception is the child benefit (A21), where the starting date for its payment through the prepaid card is 30.05.2025.

What changes?

Each beneficiary will receive a single prepaid card, which will be used exclusively for the payment of all his/her social benefits. You can therefore use the Social Solidarity Visa Prepaid card you hold to receive all the welfare benefits to which you are entitled.
You will be able to withdraw up to half of the amount of each benefit paid in cash, while the remainder can be spent exclusively using the Social Solidarity Visa Prepaid card.
You can use your card exclusively for purchases in Greece and in countries within the European Union, except for transactions for the purchase of weapons and gambling.

With your Social Solidarity Prepaid card, you can:

Pay for products and services at businesses that carry the Visa sign in Greece and abroad
Make contactless transactions in businesses that offer the option
Make online payments at e-shops

Are there any transactions I cannot make using my Social Solidarity Prepaid card?

You cannot use your Social Solidarity Prepaid VISA for:

Online payments such as income taxes, vehicle circulation tax, insurance premiums
Gambling transactions

How secure is this card?

With NBG cards, every transaction you make is secure. But you must remember that security also depends on you. You must keep in mind that your PIN is like your signature and:

It is unique, strictly personal, and confidential
It must not be disclosed to third parties, not even to bank employees
You must not write it on your card, document, or object held or carried with the card.
When you enter it, cover the keyboard.
Do not accept help from anyone to enter your PIN.
Make sure the next customer is at a safe distance from you.
For greater security, we recommend changing your PIN at regular intervals.

What shall I do if I lose my card?

When does my card expire?

The card expires in 5 years. The expiry date is stated at the front of the card.
